What's Inside the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the past of Vecna. Their mission for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.
Editor's Note: The following contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season.
The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.
Similar to other plot points of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the live show The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a dimension known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is known about his research, the container would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the children in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in the past.
The Power of Fear
His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a showdown between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict to come.
