The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes
The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.
"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
