Currently exist "no preparations" for US President President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.

This past week Trump stated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The administration withheld further information on why the talks had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with sources indicating the president had pressured him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on this week the American president embraced a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the war on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he remarked.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov commented on this week, indicating that halting hostilities would merely represent a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that encompass the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky commented discussions about the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday preceded speculation that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he commented.
