Hardline Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's Next Leader.
In a decisive final ballot, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having in the past been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Agenda Built On Security and Immigration
Known for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely built on promises to address increasing insecurity and drastically reduce migration.
He repeatedly pointed to migrants, especially the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he issued an stern warning for them to exit before the inauguration or face deportation.
His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as constructing holding facilities, high walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the military presence on the northernmost frontier.
Part of a Continental Shift
Several commentators view Kast's victory as fitting into a larger right-wing trend in Latin America, following this year's electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts further view it as a part of the established rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Strong Mandate
In spite of his clear electoral triumph, Kast is not expected to have an clear majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are combined together.
This political reality may challenge his agenda, including a vow to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to offered specifics.
"We have many aspects about how a Kast presidency will be that are uncertain because he has not said his methods for achieve them," said a political science expert.
The analyst continued, "On fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see spending cuts common for the right. However where there is much less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse during the campaign."
