The British tennis star earned the biggest win of his career by coming back from a set down to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win signifies Norrie's initial win over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. So big for me," commented Norrie, who is now the latest British man in history to defeat a top-ranked player. "Returning from health issues last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just aimed to appreciate my game in the second half of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the biggest success of my tennis journey, my first win over the global number one and probably the most in-form athlete in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, positioned No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's dominant run of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight elite tournament successes, which represented the best series of results in the Spanish star's developing professional path.

Match Breakdown

Alcaraz appeared to be progressing easily towards victory at the start as he sailed through the first set. Yet, the British contender gradually fought his way back into the game by delivering with improved accuracy and dragging the Spaniard into extended, physical points. His relentless shot tolerance and reliability slowly made an impact.

For much of the battle, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old looked notably struggling executing his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the world for a large part of this season, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, the British player gave his opponent so few mistakes, sustaining his consistency, physicality and depth throughout while serving efficiently and picking his spots to force himself inside the baseline and attack well.

Personal Context

Following battling for months due to a serious left forearm injury and struggles with his form, Norrie fell as low as 91st globally this season. After making the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros fourth round since then, this triumph highlights the experienced player's improvement as he attempts to come back to the top 20 and even higher. The Spanish sensation, despite his incredible achievements, is yet to solve how to deliver his top form on indoor courts.
